Niall Ferguson, Master of Arts y Doctor en Filosofía, tiene la Cátedra Laurence A. Tisch de Historia en la Universidad de Harvard. Es también Senior Fellow de la Institución Hoover en la Universidad de Stanford, y Senior Research Fellow en Jesus College, Oxford.

Ha publicado 14 libros. El primero, Paper and Iron: Hamburg Business and German Politics in the Era of Inflation 1897-1927 (Papel y Hierro: Negocios en Hamburgo y Política Alemana en la Era de la Inflación 1897-1927), fue preseleccionado para el premio al Libro del Año de la revista History Today, mientras que la colección de ensayos editada por él, Historia Virtual, fue Best Seller en el Reino Unido. En 1988 publica The Pity of War: Explaining World War One (La Compasión de la Guerra: Explicación de la Primera Guerra Mundial) y The World’s Banker: The History of the House of Rothschild (El Banquero del Mundo: Historia de la Casa Rothschild), aclamados por la crítica internacional. Este último ganó el premio Wadsworth de Historia de Negocios, y también fue preseleccionado para los premios Jewish Quarterly/Wingate Literary Award y American National Jewish Book Award. En 2001, luego de un año como Houblon-Norman Fellow en el Bank of England, publica Dinero y Poder en el Mundo Moderno, 1700-2000.

Niall Ferguson participa regularmente en radio y televisión a ambos lados del Atlántico. En 2003 escribió y presentó una historia en seis partes del Imperio Británico para el canal inglés Channel 4. El libro que le acompaña, El Imperio Británico: Cómo Gran Bretaña Forjó el Mundo, fue Best Seller tanto en el Reino Unido como en Estados Unidos. La segunda parte, Coloso: Auge y Decadencia del Imperio Norteamericano, fue publicado por Penguin en 2004, y llevó a la Revista Time a nombrarlo una de las 100 personas más influyentes del mundo. Dos años después publica La Guerra del Mundo: los conflictos del Siglo XX y el Declive de Occidente, del cual PBS (cadena pública de emisión norteamericana) produce una adaptación televisiva en 2007. En 2008 le sigue El Triunfo del Dinero, best seller internacional también producido por PBS que le valió un Emmy en la categoría de Mejor Documental. En 2011 publica Civilización: Occidente y el Resto, que también se convierte en una serie documental de Channel 4/PBS. En 2012 le sigue una serie televisiva de tres capítulos llamada China: Triumph and Turmoil (China: Triunfo y Caos).

Ferguson es un reconocido biógrafo. Además de la historia de la familia Rothschild, publicó recientemente High Financier: The Lives and Time of Siegmund Warburg (Alto Financista: Las Vidas y Época de Siegmund Warburg, 2010), y actualmente escribe una biografía de Henry Kissinger. En 2011 su compañía cinematográfica Chimerica Media estrena su primer largometraje documental, Kissinger, que gana el premio del Festival Internacional de Cine de Nueva York como Mejor Documental. Su libro más reciente es La Gran Degeneración: Cómo Decaen las Instituciones y Mueren las Economías, que se publicará en Estados Unidos en Junio. Niall Ferguson es un prolífico comentarista de política y economía contemporáneas, y escribe regularmente en diarios y revistas de ambos continentes. Fue profesor visitante de la Cátedra Philippe Roman en el London School of Economics en 2010-11, y Reith Lecturer de la BBC en 2012. Es miembro del Consejo Directivo de la American Academy en Berlín, del Museum of American Finance y la New York Historical Society. Sus numerosos premios y galardones incluyen el Benjamin Franklin Prize for Public Service (2010) y el Hayek Prize for Lifetime Achievement (2012). Es Director Ejecutivo de Greenmantle LLC y miembro del Directorio de Affiliated Managers Group, Inc., una empresa internacional de administración de fondos.

Niall Ferguson está casado con la reconocida escritora y activista de derechos humanos Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Tiene cuatro hijos.
