Yoani Sánchez es una aclamada bloguera, periodista independiente y fundadora de 14ymedio, el primer diario digital independiente de Cuba. Actualmente es becaria del Yahoo! Fellowship en la Universidad de Georgetown en Washington DC.
Graduada de Filología de la Universidad de La Habana, emigró a Suiza en 2002 para construir una nueva vida para ella y su familia. Dos años más tarde, regresó a La Habana con la promesa de vivir ahí como una persona libre. En 2007, comenzó Generación Y, su blog personal sobre la vida diaria en Cuba. Ha sido arrestada y detenida por el gobierno cubano por sus actividades.
En 2009, el presidente estadounidense Barack Obama escribió que su blog “provee una ventana única hacia la realidad de la vida diaria en Cuba” y aplaudió los esfuerzos de Yoani en “empoderar a sus compatriotas cubanos para expresarse a través del uso de la tecnología”. La revista TIME la catalogó como una de las 100 personas más influyentes del mundo, mencionando que “bajo las narices de un régimen que nunca ha tolerado la disidencia, Sánchez ha practicado lo que los periodistas en su país no pueden: la libertad de expresión”. La revista Foreign Policy también la nombró como una de los 100 pensadores globales más importantes.
En mayo de 2014, Sánchez logró unir su pasión por el periodismo y los medios digitales para lanzar 14ymedio: el primer diario digital independiente hecho en Cuba. El medio sirve como una nueva y refrescante voz en la Isla, con noticias nacionales e internacionales que resaltan los acontecimientos políticos, económicos, sociales y culturales que vive Cuba y el mundo. 14ymedio tiene como meta ser el medio de comunicación independiente que acompañe la transición en Cuba.
Sánchez ha recibido numerosos reconocimientos internacionales por su trabajo, incluyendo el Premio Ortega y Gasset, el más alto reconocimiento al periodismo digital en España; el premio Maria Moors Cabot de Columbia University; el Premio Héroe Mundial de la Libertad de Prensa del Instituto Internacional de Prensa; y el Premio Prince Claus de Holanda.
